Ohana Pet Hospital co-founders providing local and national leadership in support of education and business entrepreneurship
November 4, 2022
Ventura, CA – Dr. Jill Muraoka Lim (Dr. Jill), co-founder of Ohana Pet Hospital, has been appointed to the Ventura
College Foundation Board of Directors. Her colleague, co-founder and Medical Director Dr. Janis Shinkawa (Dr.
Jan) has been named to the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Board of Directors.
In 2017, Dr. Jill and Dr. Jan approached Ventura College President, Dr. Kimberly Hoffmans, RN, EdD, to work
with Ventura College leadership in the development of a new Veterinary Technology program. Established in
2020, this new Associate’s degree program will help fill the growing need for veterinary technicians and
assistants. “We are excited to have Dr. Jill on the Ventura College Foundation board. She was instrumental in
the successful launch of Ventura College’s Veterinary Technology Associate’s degree program at the college’s
East Campus in Santa Paula. The program will have a great impact on the quality of veterinary care in Ventura
County and beyond. She will bring that same drive and dedication as a VC Foundation board member to help
provide resources and financial support to the students at Ventura College as they pursue their educational
dreams.”
In addition to providing program fundraising support, the VC Foundation provides financial assistance to
students as they work to advance their careers and potential. “I’ve seen first-hand the difference that the
support from the Ventura College Foundation makes in a student’s life,” said Dr. Jill Muraoka Lim, Ventura
College Foundation Board Member. “I’m honored to be part of the vital work the VC Foundation does to help
students overcome barriers to successfully complete their education.” This announcement comes as the
inaugural class of the Veterinary Technology Program enters its final semester, culminating with a degree as an
Associate of Science.
Education, training and development in the veterinary field and in business management are a shared passion
of Dr. Jill and Dr. Jan. In addition to helping launch Ventura College’s Veterinary Technology program, Dr. Jill and
Dr. Jan worked with the Charter College President in Oxnard to create the first local veterinary assistant program
in 2014. Ohana Pet Hospital is also an active supporter of the Ventura County Office of Education high school
veterinary assistant program offered through the Career Education Centers.
In further news, Dr. Janis Shinkawa, known locally as Dr. Jan, was named to the National Association of Women
Business Owners Board of Directors. “For nearly five decades, NAWBO’s legacy and impact has been that we
grow and succeed as women business owners by supporting one another,” said NAWBO CEO Jen Earle. “We are
incredibly grateful for servant leaders like Dr. Jan who have dedicated themselves to supporting women
business owners—now and in the future—through the passion and expertise they bring to our National Board.”
This national seat places Shinkawa alongside Board colleagues from across the country as they work to propel
women business owners into greater economic, social, and political spheres of power worldwide.
“I am truly grateful for my fellow NAWBO colleagues. I joined NAWBO when Ohana Pet Hospital was established
nine years ago and continue to learn a lot from this impactful organization,” said Dr. Janis Shinkawa, NAWBO
National Board Member. “I am honored to be welcomed by our National Board and look forward to continuing
the trailblazing work of NAWBO leaders before me for the benefit of women business owners, entrepreneurs
and business students nationwide.” Shinkawa was the 2015-16 President of the NAWBO Ventura County
chapter. She was named a finalist for the NAWBO National Women Business Owner of the Year award in 2017.
